# SHL numerical reasoning test

SHL’s numerical reasoning tests ask you to draw conclusions from charts, tables and figures on a clock. SHL’s current interactive version allows 18 minutes for up to 10 questions, where you build charts and fill in tables, and the multiple-choice Numerical Ability test allows 20 minutes for up to 16. Both are adaptive, so each question depends on your earlier answers, and a calculator is usually allowed.

## Which SHL numerical test will you take?

SHL retired its original Verify Numerical Reasoning test in 2024 and pointed employers to two replacements: Verify Interactive Numerical Reasoning and Verify Numerical Ability. Numerical questions also make up a third of Verify G+, SHL’s combined test. Your invitation usually names the test; the time limits below are from SHL’s fact sheets, and an employer’s package can differ.

| Test | Questions | Time | Format |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Verify Interactive Numerical Reasoning | Up to 10 | 18 minutes | Interactive, adaptive |
| Verify Numerical Ability | Up to 16 | 20 minutes | Multiple choice, adaptive |
| Verify G+ (numerical part) | 10 of 30 | 36 minutes for all three parts | Multiple choice, adaptive |

## What will SHL numerical practice include?

Practice Round is building timed numerical rounds in both SHL styles: multiple-choice questions on charts and tables, and interactive tasks where you complete a chart or a table. Every question is our own, with a worked explanation, and your pace is tracked against the 18 and 20 minute clocks.

## What will an SHL numerical practice round look like?

### We’re writing a sample round

A short numerical sample, with every answer worked through, will appear here before practice opens.

## What does the SHL numerical test cover?

The interactive test measures how well you draw correct conclusions from numerical or statistical data, through tasks like building charts and graphs and filling in spreadsheets. SHL aims it at mid-level roles. The multiple-choice Numerical Ability test covers percentages, fractions, decimals, proportions, basic geometry and probability, and reading charts and tables. SHL says it doesn’t test number sequences or need outside knowledge.

## What does adaptive mean for you?

On an adaptive test, each question’s difficulty depends on your earlier answers, so two people rarely see the same set. It also means fewer questions than an older fixed test; SHL credits its partial-scoring method for that. Treat every question as if it counts, because it does.

## How should you practice for SHL numerical reasoning?

Start with SHL’s own practice tests, which come in both interactive and multiple-choice styles, so you know which one your invitation matches. Then practice on a clock: the hard part for most people isn’t the math but finishing in 18 or 20 minutes while reading charts accurately. Keep a calculator and scratch paper ready, and check your browser with SHL’s browser check before the real test.

## What if something goes wrong during the test?

SHL says not to click Exit if a test freezes. Refresh the page, or reopen your invitation link and choose Continue. SHL doesn’t send a completion email; finished tests show a green tick. Only the employer can approve resetting a completed test.

## How do you ask for extra time or other adjustments?

Talk to the recruiter as early as you can. SHL says most of its assessments can be adjusted, for example with extra time, screen reader support or large print, and that extra time has to be approved by the employer.

## Common questions about the SHL numerical

### Can you use a calculator on the SHL numerical test?

Usually. SHL’s candidate help says you may use a calculator on numerical tests unless you’ve been told otherwise. On SHL’s separate AMCAT platform, only the on-screen calculator is allowed. Keep pen and paper handy either way.

### Is the SHL numerical test adaptive?

Yes. SHL’s fact sheets describe both current numerical tests as adaptive, so the difficulty of each question depends on how you answered the ones before it.

### Do you get your SHL results?

No. SHL says its support team can’t give candidates their results; only the employer sees them, and the employer sets any passing score.

### Does SHL have its own practice test?

Yes. SHL’s candidate site offers numerical practice tests in interactive and multiple-choice styles at no charge, and says they may not exactly match the difficulty of the real test.

## What does a 30-day pass cost?

A SHL numerical 30-day pass will cost $29. It will include unlimited timed practice rounds in the same format as the test, an explanation for every answer and your score history. Passes aren’t on sale yet. Join the waitlist and we’ll email you the day yours opens.
