Who sets the rules in a HireVue interview?
The employer does. HireVue’s 2026 explainability statement lists the settings each employer chooses: preparation time from none to 5 minutes or unlimited, answer time from 30 seconds to 15 minutes or unlimited, and from 1 to 5 recording attempts or unlimited. HireVue’s own recommendations are below. Your invitation or the instructions screen tells you the actual limits before each question.

How does an on-demand HireVue interview work?
You get a link from the employer and record at a time you choose before the deadline. Each question appears on screen, a prep timer runs, and then you record your answer before the answer timer ends. There’s no live interviewer. HireVue says most answers are a few minutes long, and you’ll get a practice question first so you can check your camera and get a feel for the timers.
What are the games in a HireVue assessment?
Some employers add short game-based assessments. HireVue says they usually take about 6 to 15 minutes, measure abilities like numerical reasoning or personality areas, and get harder or easier depending on how you do. HireVue also runs coding assessments for technical roles.
How does HireVue say AI is used?
AI scoring only happens where the employer has turned it on. HireVue says its AI scores what you say, using a transcript of your answers, and doesn’t use your facial expressions, body language, background or tone of voice. You’ll see a notice and can opt out, in which case recruiters rate your interview on the same scales. HireVue says the employer always makes the hiring decision and that it doesn’t use your video to identify you.
What do you need to take a HireVue interview?
A webcam, a microphone and speakers, and a connection of at least 350 Kbps. HireVue’s technical specifications list the latest Chrome (recommended), Firefox, Safari 15 or later and Edge 95 or later, or its app on iOS and Android. A phone or tablet works too.
How should you practice for a HireVue interview?
Use HireVue’s practice question to check your setup, then practice answering out loud against a clock: plan in about a minute, and finish a complete answer in about three. Look at the camera, not the screen, and keep notes to a few points rather than a script. Practicing with a timer is what makes the real timers feel normal.
How do you ask for an accommodation?
Ask the recruiter or hiring team, not HireVue. HireVue says employers can set up alternative assessments, and that you can ask to see questions in advance as an accommodation.
Common questions about the HireVue
How long does a HireVue interview take?
HireVue says a typical AI-scored assessment has 4 to 6 video questions and 2 to 3 game questions and takes about 15 to 25 minutes. Its candidate FAQ suggests setting aside 45 minutes to be safe.
Can you redo a HireVue answer?
It depends on the employer, who sets from 1 to 5 attempts per question, or unlimited. HireVue recommends three attempts in total.
Does HireVue use AI to judge your face or voice?
HireVue says that where an employer turns on AI scoring, it scores only the words in your answers, from a transcript, not your face, body language, background or tone. You can opt out, and a recruiter then rates the interview.
Can you practice before a HireVue interview?
Yes. HireVue gives you a practice question before the real interview, and says practice answers aren’t seen by anyone else. HireVue suggests practicing at least two or three.
Can you take a HireVue interview on your phone?
Yes. HireVue says you can record on a smartphone, tablet or computer, using its app or a supported browser.
